What is an owner builder?
An owner builder is defined by the relevant authorities as being a person not in the business of building.
That means as an owner builder, you can only build a domestic dwelling that you intend to reside in for a specified period of time. The owner builder will generally control the activities associated with the construction of their owner builder project. This may include purchasing materials and organising trade contractors to complete the required tasks. See the video below: |
What is an owner builder legally permitted to build?
The primary restriction on owner builder structures is that they are limted to domestic dwellings.
You can renovate, add, alter or construct new houses, patios, swimming pools, garages etc, provided you intend to live in the premises for the legislated time period as shown on your owner builder permit.
